Evolved Natural Skincare~Blissoma

Skincarealltogether-4emailsmaller

Repeat after me: natural. Natural.  Natural.  There’s not much more you could ask for in terms of eco-consciousness with a guiding mantra like “Natural”.  And Blissoma by Irie Star does exactly that.  Irie (pronounced eye-ree) means positivity and unity, which is the motivation behind Blissoma skincare and apothecary products. Nature, positivity, and pleasure all from a soy-based candle? Sounds good to me.

The Blissoma aromatherapy line began in 2005 and is now carried nationwide, including many local Whole Foods and health centers.  They have created perfume oils categorized by the season for $24.95, and their entertaining descriptions make a visit to their website worth your while. For example:  Our Spring and Summer collection will make you want to kick off your shoes and wiggle your toes in the grass….Luscious Sunshine is a slice of a lazy summer afternoon wrapped in orange blossoms. This scent is perfect to wear with a sundress for a romp in the park. Crushed grass, sweet kisses, and sunshine…

Not out to break your budget, their skin care line is certified cruelty-free, vegetarian, and a multiple winner of fig+sage choice awards. Ranging from $8 for bar soaps to $22 for clay masks, their products are prepared with fresh herb extracts, juices, and source seed oils pressed on demand to maximize nutrient content.  Believing that life is dynamic (so true!) as is your skin, Blissoma’s skin care collection is built on the same living energy with a motto of “We feed rather than force, inspire instead of irritate.”  One of my favorites from the line is the Intense Hydration Tonique.  It was created to spray on your face after you cleanse but I find myself misting it all over my body.  Love this stuff!

Created by Julie Longyear, a self-identified “old soul in a futuristic world”, the owner and creative chemist aims to make an impact without leaving a footprint.  She is a student of life as she looks for new ways to bring her customers joy and energy via pleasurable, useful products.

Having caught the attention of various national magazines such as Yoga Journal, Surf Life for Women and Massage, Bodywork Magazine and now HipMomsGoGreen, Blissoma skin and bodycare products are a must-try for all who love their body as well the earth!

Aromatherapy for Cold and Flu Season

coldflusteam

Did you know there are roughly one billion cases of the common cold each year in the U.S.?  The common cold is the number one cause for adults to miss work and for students to miss a combined 22 million school days each year.  Wow!  With school in full swing and winter weather keeping many of us indoors for the next few months, it’s a good time to learn what we can do to stay healthy.

In addition to practicing good health habits like eating well, getting enough rest, and managing stress, adding essential oils to your routine is an easy and fun way to enhance your immune system.  Essential oils support the overall health of the body while they kill bacteria and viruses.  They may help you avoid getting sick, and can help you recover more quickly if you do get sick.  In my own experience, since I incorporated aromatherapy into my life, I have not had a cold in over four years.

Many essential oils are wonderful for respiratory illnesses.  German Chamomile, Eucalyptus globulus, and Rosemary are anti-viral and anti-bacterial, and are serious decongestants.  Ravintsara, Lemon, and Siberian Fir are anti-bacterial and are mucolytic: they break up and make expelling mucous easier.  Adding oils like Lavender, Peppermint, and Tea Tree to your blends will give the immune system a boost.

Three ways to use essential oils to support your health or while you are sick are:

1)   In a steam: to a bowl of boiling water, add 1 drop of any of the essential oils listed above.  Drape a towel over your head, lean over the bowl making sure to close your eyes, and inhale.  This is a good way to reduce congestion, support the immune system, and the steam is like a mini-facial, adding any needed moisture to your skin.  Another way to do this is to add 3-5 drops of essential oil to your shower (away from the drain).  The heat and steam from the shower have the same effect as inhaling over a bowl.

2)   In a hand soap: to a 2 ounce PET plastic bottle with a flip top, add 1 ½ ounces Castile soap (found in health food stores).  To this, add 20-24 drops of any of the essential oils above and about ½ ounce water.  Shake to combine.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cites hand-washing as one of the best ways to avoid catching the flu.

3)   In a carrier: to 1 ounce of a quality, unscented lotion or organic Jojoba, add 5-6 drops of essential oil.  Apply this blend to your throat and chest 2-3 times per day to enhance your immune system or to help relieve any congestion.  (A word of safety: due to the strength of some of their components, avoid using Eucalyptus globulus, Rosemary, Ravintsara, and Peppermint with children under 5 years of age and use caution around those with asthma).

These suggestions for using essential oils are a wonderful way to defend yourself against germs, naturally!

Pink Washing – Just How is it Helping Fight Breast Cancer?

pinkribbon

The term ‘green washing’ is pretty common now and at HipMomsGoGreen we are familiar with what to watch out for. But there is a deceptive new marketing practice out there called ‘pink washing’ and it’s hitting the shops right now.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month (http://www.bcaction.org/) is in full swing. Most of us know people who are suffering or have suffered from this nasty cancer, so it is a cause dear to many of our hearts and we all want to help where we can. Many products now carry a pink label, package or the symbol of a pink ribbon during Breast Cancer Awareness Month to show that they will donate a portion of sales to fighting breast cancer. However, according to independent scientific testing, some of the products you have just purchased thinking you are supporting battling cancer actually have the potential to cause that cancer in the first place! Sounds outrageous but that’s pink marketing in action.

There are plenty of examples of ‘pink washing’ at work and I hate to name names, so my suggestion is you take a good look at the company that produces the product you want and what the ingredients are. Check if the product contains a range of nasty chemicals that have suspected links to causing cancer: such as sulfates, phthalates and petroleum products. Parabens are also a bad sign and can be found in many of the cosmetics and care products that are promoted during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We know these things can’t be good for our bodies.

It is also worth having a look at how the product has been packaged. For example, bottled water containers are usually made from Bishenol-A (BPA), which is a known hormone disrupter that has been linked to breast cancer. Recent studies have also linked the chemicals found in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic bottles with interfering with estrogen production. And why would the U.S. Government ban BPA from infant products but still allow it in women’s merchandise? There are arguments for both sides of the debate, but if you have the choice then I say it just makes sense to stay away from plastic bottles with BPA or PET in them, especially when they have been pink washed.

When you are bombarded with pink products this month and really looking to help support the cause, I suggest you check out the Think Before You Pink blog set up by Breast Cancer Action. They are trying to give consumers more information so you can make a more enlightened choice about what products you might purchase to help assist fighting breast cancer. You’ll find some great insight into some of the more devious pink marketing campaigns out there plus ideas on what you can do about the pink washing.

It’s a sad sign of the times when we have to watch out for crazes like pink washing, but HipMomsGoGreen are an astute bunch, and with good information we can make great decisions to help protect us and our families.

Essential Oils Safety

cat

While essential oils are obtained from plants and are natural substances, they do need to be used with safety in mind.  Some basic guidelines can help you get the most out of aromatherapy.  A few important points to keep in mind are:

1).Use a carrier: a “carrier” is an oil (such as Jojoba, Sweet Almond, or unscented lotion, and preferably organic) that essential oils are blended into.  It’s a good idea to use a carrier when applying oils to your skin.  The carrier can help prolong the effects of the essential oil because it takes longer to be absorbed.  Applying most essential oils directly to the skin (what we call “neat”) could cause a rash or other irritation.  If you experience this, apply a fatty oil such as olive oil to the skin to remove the essential oil.  The two essential oils that can be applied neat are Lavender and Tea Tree.  Both can be used sparingly on acne; a drop of Lavender works wonders when applied to burns and insect stings, and helps speed the healing of cuts and scrapes.  Be sure to wash your hands after using essential oils to avoid getting them into your eyes.

2).Internal use: Due to their concentration and to the fact that some oils are irritating to the stomach and other body organs, it is my opinion that essential oils should never be used internally.  The benefits of essential oils can easily be obtained through inhalation or topical application.  If used internally for any reason, it should be under the guidance of a certified aromatherapist with extensive experience in this area.  It is interesting to note that in France, where aromatherapy is quite established, aromatherapists who create internal use-blends for their clients must register the blend with the local hospital.  In case of any adverse reaction, the hospital staff will know which essential oils were taken, underscoring the fact that internal use of essential oils is something to be taken seriously.

3).Babies & Animals: Because they are so highly concentrated, essential oils should be used with great care with children (especially those under 2 years of age).  Children receive the positive effects of the oils best from inhalation alone, so diffusing them before bed time or during times of illness is a great option.  Lavender and Roman Chamomile are two essential oils that work well with kids.  Both are calming, can help with cold or flu symptoms, and are supportive to the immune system.  For topical use, one drop of either of these essential oils in one ounce of unscented lotion is a wonderful addition to natural baby care.  Essential oils use around cats should also be done with caution.  A good rule of thumb is: don’t use essential oils on animals under approximately 60 pounds, and never apply essential oils to your cat’s fur.  The feline eliminative system does not have the ability to filter the oils, causing them to build up in their systems and become toxic.  Tea Tree is one essential oil that can be especially harmful to cats.  Provide ventilation or keep your cat out of the room when cleaning with essential oils.

4). Quality: this is the most important factor when using essential oils.  Quality is vital when using them on your skin or around your children.  Unadulterated essential oils contain only the pure plant extract, offering the fullest potential of the plant’s therapeutic properties.  A poor-quality oil perhaps containing pesticides or synthetic fragrances, or cut with other oils is unable to address the issue for which it is used.  It can also cause a rash and, with repeated use, can be harmful to the overall health of the body.  Many essential oils claim to be “pure,” but, the only way to know what’s in the essential oils you use is to purchase GC/MS-tested oils.  This is a process done to ensure there are no synthetic fragrances, pesticides, or carrier oils, just the actual essential oil.  To find out if the oils you use are in fact GC/MS-tested call the company’s Customer Service department and ask if they test their oils.  An internet search can help you find an essential oil company that offers GC/MS-tested oils.  The knowledge that the oils you use are indeed what they claim to be offers peace of mind and a freedom to explore aromatherapy.

By keeping these ideas in mind as you use essential oils, you can safely support your health and that of your family.

Natural Remedies Hit The Spot~5 Safe and Effective Ingredients to Fade Age and Sun Spots

Age-Spot-before

If you’re over 30 or grew up in the southern part of the US, you’ve probably noticed them. Those little brownish spots that seem to appear overnight on your forehead that, no matter how hard you try, you just can seem to scrub away (and by the way, please stop trying to scrub them off, you’re causing more damage!). Age spots, also known as sun spots because they are most often caused by sun damage, are flat, benign areas of hyperpigmentation. These brownish spots usually occur on the hands and face, with the forehead most often affected. Conventional treatments for hyperpigmentation include bleach and Retin-A, which have an array of serious side effects including cancer, reproductive toxicity and skin allergies. Cryotherapy and light therapy are viable treatments options but can cost thousands of dollars.

Fortunately, there are several natural and amazingly effective ingredients to fade and prevent age spots. Here are the top 5 to look for in your skincare (and in your fridge!):

1. Antioxidants – Not only do antioxidants help fight free radicals on the inside when taken orally, but they do the same when applied topically. Vitamin C specifically is an excellent choice because of its additional natural bleaching properties.

2. Enzymes – Natural enzymes are found in such fruits as papaya, pineapple and apple. These enzymes safely and effectively accelerate the body’s own exfoliation process thereby removing dead and damaged skin cells and fading age spots.

3. Yogurt – Yogurt contains lactic acid which lightens and exfoliates skin. You can use yogurt alone for 20-30 minutes or add honey for some extra hydration and anti-bacterial benefits. You can also mix it into powdered masks to add the lightening benefits.

4. Aloe – Aloe is commonly known to facilitate healing and does so by promoting new cell growth. For this same reason it is an excellent way to speed up exfoliation and remove damaged skin cells. Apply aloe from a plant or aloe juice to the spot twice a day for a month. Or look for serums that contain high contents of aloe.

5. Lemon – Dab some fresh lemon juice on the spot twice daily. If you are going outdoors, wait for the juice to dry as it increases the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight and wear sunblock. It may take a few months, but the acidity in the juice will cause the spots to fade away.

Going and Selling Green

JustForKids-BathCare

Chartreuse is a fabulous line of products that can help anyone achieve a greener life.  They have a wide array of products to choose from like organic personal care, cleaning products, and Reusable Essentials.  My favorite has to be the Just For Kids Body Wash made with sweet orange essential oil.  Yummy!  The great thing about Chartreuse is that they offer an opportunity for you to start a business that is fun and helps the environment at the same time.  I spoke with Corey Meiringer who is a founding consultant and this is what she had to say:

1. Tell us about the quality of the ingredients in Chartreuse products?

At Chartreuse we use certified organic ingredients (see our labels..nothing is left out) No phthalates, parabens or sulfates. There are no artificial colors or fragrances. All of our products at Chartreuse must pass four important criteria: They must be earth-friendly, fun and fashionable, reasonably priced, and they must work as well, if not better than conventional products.

2. I see that you are a founding consultant for this company, what prompted you to join this company?

As a scuba diver, I was dismayed at the shocking realization that portions of our oceans contain more plastic than plankton; this was the “eye opener” that began my pledge to  help others in my community reduce the waste/plastics in their homes. While searching for green, environmentally-safe products, I came across Chartreuse. I tried the cleaning and child care products…they worked so well I signed up as a consultant that day.

3. Tell me how someone else could get involved in selling Chartreuse?

Our products are easy to sell because they are fashionable, reasonably priced and environmentally conscious. Anyone interested in selling products that they can “truly believe in” should go to my web page www.greenergardenstate.com and click on the Shop for Products tab followed by the Business Opportunity tab or give me a call at 973-580-8878.

4. What type of person may be interested in becoming an Eco-Consultant?

An empty nester who is passionate about going green and would like a business of their own. Or someone who is looking for a change, something to call their own, contribute to the family next egg or earning income to pay their children’s education, retirement or even a second home.

5. What happens at your parties?

Anti-Age Naturally

anti-aging skin care

Aging naturally or gracefully is great, but I want to talk about natural ways to fight and prevent signs of aging. Aside from a diet rich in colorful fruits and vegetables, not-smoking and getting plenty of sleep and water, choosing the right skincare is incredibly important for keeping a youthful glow. There are several key anti-aging ingredients to look for in skincare, from modern nutriceuticals (nutrients for your skin) to herbal extracts.

Rosemary: strengthens the capillaries and fights age damage, has a rejuvenating effect

Green tea: fights free radicals and inflammation, prevents skin cancer, rejuvenates old skin cells, calms acne

Aloe vera: a cellular regenerator that has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties

Seaweed: contains phytonutrients that help blood circulation and maintain collagen

Horsetail: an herb used as an epithelial regenerator, it improves circulation and rejuvenates connective tissue

Vitamin C Ester - treats fine lines and wrinkles on sun-damaged skin, helps sagging due to lost or damaged collagen

Alpha Lipoic Acid – a natural antioxidant that fights cellular free radicals. Improves overall appearance of the skin, is best for treating lines and wrinkles, under eye bags and puffiness, enlarged pores, acne scars, sallow or dull skin

CoenzymeQ10 – a powerful antioxidant, it is fat soluble and can reach the cell plasma membrane where free radical damage often takes place. Used to treat fine lines on the face

DMAE (dimethylaminoethanol) – is an antioxidant membrane stabilizer. This nutrient complex is a food grade substance and boosts the effects of other antioxidants. Used to firm the skin on the face and body

Tocotrienol (d-alpha-tocotrienol) - very potent form of vitamin E. Effective for repairing damaged skin

Methylsulfonymethane (MSM) – an organic sulfur compound that has been deemed a ‘super nutrient’. Promotes collagen development and prevents oxidation of cell membranes

Calcium ascorbate – neutralized Vitamin C that is essential for the maintenance of connective tissue and collagen. Defends against free radicals and recycles the body’s Vitamin E

When looking for skincare, always read product labels, and I don’t mean the front labels, I meant the FULL ingredient list. The skincare industry is not very regulated and a label can say ‘all-natural’ even if there is only 1% natural ingredients. Also, most companies know what people are looking for in skincare and use ingredients from the list above, which are most likely listed on the front label. Unfortunately, what you find next to all the wonderful botanicals and extracts are dangerous, toxic chemicals. A prime example is Creme de la Mer, which does contain some beneficial ingredients, but is primarily made up of mineral oil (a cheap filler that prevents your skin from breathing) and contains a slew of other chemicals. Your skin, like the rest of your body, responds better to naturally occurring things. Using only natural, anti-aging ingredients will result in happy, healthy, glowing skin.

What Exactly is Aromatherapy and What is an Aromatherapist?

200506083-001

Recently, I was asked what I did for a living. When I responded, “I’m an aromatherapist,” I was met with: “What the heck is that?” As I went on to explain what aromatherapy is and was still met with a smile and a blank stare, I had to laugh to myself that this guy had no idea what I was talking about. I realize there are probably scores of people who don’t know what aromatherapy is, but, in that moment, I also realized just how grateful I am to have it in my life. Among other things, aromatherapy offers us an alternative to chemicals, empowers us to take responsibility for our health, supports the body-mind, and allows us to connect with ourselves and with nature.

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils for therapeutic purposes, both physical and emotional. Distilled from plants, essential oils help us stay physically healthy through their ability to kill microorganisms while supporting the immune system. At the same time, upon inhalation, essential oils like Orange support our emotional health by enhancing our mood, or, in the case of Rose, by calming us. Pharmaceuticals, such as antibiotics, kill the intended bacteria as well as any “good” bacteria, leaving us vulnerable to further sickness.

Each essential oil is made up of a varied chemistry of components. These components give the oil its therapeutic abilities. When three or more essential oils are combined, a health-enhancing blend with all of the oils’ properties is created. Several recent studies have begun to confirm what many in the aromatherapy world already know: aromatherapy works! Tea Tree, Cinnamon, and Thyme have been shown to be highly effective against MRSA infections, and Lavender is being looked at as a natural weed killer.

An aspect of aromatherapy that I find particularly empowering is that it offers us an alternative to chemicals. We can use essential oils in place of household cleaners and personal care products that contain synthetic ingredients which are injurious to our bodies and to our planet. In this way, we promote our good health as well as the health of our families, our homes, and the Earth on a consistent basis.

Aromatherapy encourages us to connect with our inner selves through the simple process of inhalation. The very action of breathing in quiets us, focusing our attention on the experience and aroma at hand. Once we develop a relationship with essential oils, we are much more attuned to the plants they come from, and in my opinion, to the natural world as a whole. The centering and awareness that comes about is soothing to both the body and the mind.

One of the things I love about aromatherapy is: it’s a highly personal experience. An aroma that appeals to me may not appeal to you and vice versa. Because of this, the blending opportunities are endless and we can continually learn from one another. I look forward to hearing about your favorite essential oil combinations and what you use them for.

Here is mine: an anti-bacterial bathroom spray of 10 drops Eucalyptus and 12 drops Orange essential oils in a 2 oz. spray bottle filled with water. Shaken before each use, this spray will clear the air of germs, leaving a clean and uplifting aroma while offering a healthy option to a commercial air freshener.
