Summer is over and its that time of year to go school shopping. Try to reuse items from last year to stay green and recycle the ones that are trashed. You can make back to school shopping fun, eco, and safe this year with HipMomsGoGreen picks. I have personally bought all of the items on the list. All of the products are on a second year of use so they really last!
The Spicy Relish Lunch Tote by Built is the best lunch box. My youngest son used a built lunch box last year and it is still in perfect condition this year. My other sons had different brands that will remain nameless. These were trashed and looked like I ran over them with my car. The built bag has a TON of space for everything including a full size water bottle, bowls, sacks, napkin and more. It folds flat when empty and is fairly compact. The neoprene stretches to accommodate all your lunch essentials and stands up solid. Its easy to carry with soft-grip handles or with removable shoulder strap. It comes with an inside pocket and has a zip closure. The bag was tested for lead safety, has no vinyl or PVC. The best part is that you can wash it and it is like NEW! Enjoy.
The Klean Kanteen 18 oz colorful bottle with sports cap is a reusable, stainless steel bottle that is lab tested to be 100% free of heavy metal, toxins, and BPA. This is the perfect size because you can also fit it in the lunch tote. The wide-mouth accommodates ice cubes (big issue for others) and makes cleaning easy. The sports cap is wonderful but if you have a toddler I have mentioned before the sippy cup lid is the best from this company.
I love LunchSkins Reusable Sandwich Bags mainly because they work very well. These bags have a seal that is strong and the food stays fresh. I am on my second year with these bags so they really hold up well are worth the price. They are a colorful, high-quality alternative to plastic baggies. Made from the same food-safe materials used in high-end bakeries and patisseries, not only will they store your food. They are quick drying, greaseproof, and dishwasher safe. They are high-quality cotton with food-safe coating, and are BPA-free, lead-free and phthalate-free. They also have a nice big space to write your child’s name.
Kids Konserve stainless steel containers are perfect for packing your lunches. They last forever and are made with an amazing seal when you place the top on. The tiered sizes hold snacks, sides and main courses and they nest inside each other when you’re done, taking up minimal storage space. Unlike many other containers, they don’t leak, so you can pack your favorite foods and toss them in your bags without worry.
Working as a green professional organizer a lot of my clients are busy moms’ looking for help to simplify their lives. As a Mom you not only have to keep yourself organized but your kids too and sometimes that even includes your husband. Being organized will help you save money and time: more time you can spend with your family. Here are a couple of quick tips to simplify your life and get organized.
The Book- The days of writing on loose pieces of paper and post-it’s are over. Once you write it down it’s free to float all over the house so it will be hard to find when you need it. And all this loose paper builds up clutter in your home. My solution is to get a small book like a journal that can fit in your purse. Now the discipline, everything you write down goes into that book. If it ends up on a separate piece of paper transfer it into the book. That way when you are looking for that number of the great babysitter that was recommended you will know exactly where to find it. And the more you write in the book the more valuable it will become, so make sure your name and number are clearly visible incase you misplace it.
Pay Bills Online with Auto-pay-Did you know that 23% of adults say they pay bills late (and incur fees) because they lose them. And if all U.S. households received and paid their bills online, it would eliminate more than 800,000 tons of waste each year. So no more late fees and saving trees? Yes, it will take you a little bit of time to set it up but you only have to do it once. Gather up all of your bills and set aside sometime to do one at a time. Make sure you write down all of your log in information and passwords and make sure to keep it in a safe place.
Kids’ Artwork-Your kids are producing dozens of masterpieces a week. So how do you preserve and keep all this artwork? Easy, digitize it. Take a picture of all of their artwork and then only keep a few original pieces. Then you can upload them to anonline website to create a book for you and your family to enjoy for years to come. Saves you space and keeps the artwork organized.

Like people, it is important that we feed our canine companions healthy food. But what do we look for in dog food and treats to achieve the desired level of healthfulness? What differentiates an organic dog treat from a holistic or natural one? It is worth mentioning that the dog food and dog treat industry do not have a government sponsored regulating agency such as the FDA. However this does not mean the industry is left completely unchecked. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) acts as the standard setter to the domestic pet food manufacturers. The self-stated basic goal of AAFCO is to provide a mechanism for developing and implementing uniform and equitable laws, regulations, standards and enforcement policies for regulating the manufacture, distribution and sale of animal feeds. Although the AAFCO has a major role in determining what constitutes acceptable dog food, they are not able to certify the organic authenticity of a specific product. The role of determining if a particular dog food or dog treats is organic has traditionally fallen into the hands of a couple of governing bodies. The USDA is one of a few select groups that can give organic certification in the United States.
As we are all becoming more conscious of what we put into our own mouths as well as those of our pets, the demand for organic products has greatly increased in the last few years. Let’s begin by looking at what makes a pet product organic. In the US, federal organic legislation defines three levels of “organic”. As you’d expect, products made entirely with certified organic ingredients and methods may be labeled “100% Organic”. However, products with at least 95% organic ingredients may also be called “Organic”. All of these products may also display the USDA organic seal. A third category, containing a minimum of 70% organic ingredients, can be labeled “Made With Organic Ingredients”. In addition, products may also display the logo of the certifying body that approved them. Any products made with less than 70% organic ingredients cannot advertise itself as organic and can only mention use this statement in the product’s ingredient list. As you can tell, it starts to get a little confusing when trying to identify organic dog food or treats but the best advice is to look for the USDA Organic logo. Most products that have this certification will display it prominently due to its marketing appeal.
The second organic certification group often seen in the dog food and dog treat industry is Oregon Tilth. The stated purpose of Oregon Tilth is to educate gardeners, farmers, legislators, and the general public about the need to develop and use sustainable growing practices that promote soil health, conserve natural resources, and prevent environmental degradation while producing a clean and healthful food supply for humanity. There are other organic certifying groups besides the aforementioned but these are the most common.
A natural dog food or treat should not contain any artificial colors or flavors. Simply put, natural flavors are already appealing enough and no chemical enhancement is needed. Your dog’s food should not contain any meat by-products. Meat by-products are commonly found in grocery store quality commercial dog treats and food. These by-products are oftentimes of poor quality, and are difficult for dogs to digest. By-products are, for lack of a better description, the left-over parts remaining after the whole meat is processed. These are undesirable parts and they can contain potentially harmful ingredients including feathers, hair, and other meat parts. Simply put, they are not good nutrient sources. There should also be a limited amount of sugar and salt in your dog’s food and treats. Other common ingredients to avoid are corn syrup, dextrose, sucrose, sodium chloride, and monosodium glutamate. There should be no chemical preservatives in natural dog foods and treats. Look for products that are natural preserved by vitamin E, vitamin C, rosemary or sage.
The typical “Holistic” dog food or treat is made with high quality, natural ingredients with a focus on the entire being versus the individual parts. These healthy “holistic” ingredients thus have a positive effect on a dogs overall health and well being. Many dog food companies label their food as holistic but in this writer’s opinion there is no definitive difference between a “natural” or “holistic” pet product. There are currently no defined rules or regulations regarding the labeling of dog food as “holistic”. So simply put, natural and holistic are potentially one in the same. Each company has a varying opinion of what exactly “holistic” means so you may look long and hard to find a clear definition as it pertains to a specific product.
We are constantly reading labels at the grocery stores for the food what we feed for families, and the same high standard should carry over to the canine companions in our care. Researching quality products, whether they are organic, natural or holistic will help to assure greater quality of life for the Fido in your house.

It also examines the complex web of market and political forces that are changing what we eat as huge multi-national corporations seek to control the world’s food system. “One of 2005′s must-see documentaries” -San Francisco Chronicle.

Following her first two hits (and a couple of my absolute favorite reads!), “Gorgeously Green” and “The Gorgeously Green Diet”, Sophie Uliano has done it again for all the green ladies out there! New York Times’ Bestseller, “Do it Gorgeously” is a must-read for any any woman who wants to live a healthy, eco-conscious life… fabulously.
Uliano’s intent with this book is to reach out to the average woman, and teach her how to save money, reduce, reuse, and recycle all with the use of common sense. Inside, you’ll find easily-explained lessons, tips, tricks and dozens of Do It Yourself projects, including how to keep bugs away by brewing up some completely organic smelly pest spray! She even has instructions for how to sew a button by hand, how to paint a perfect room (non-toxic of course) and how to make a wine cork kitchen board made out of your favorite wine corks!
Sophie has been making her own products for years, and wants to share all her secrets with us. The “ins and outs” of eco-friendly DIY can be tough, as often we just don’t know where to begin. This book will tell you exactly where, and how to be efficient and creative at the same time.
10% of book-sale profits are being donated to CanswerLink, an organization that provides non-toxic housecleaning to cancer patients for free. Pick up “Do It Gorgeously” and Sophie Uliano’s other books at your local bookstore or Amazon.com. This will be one book you’ll be picking up again and again!
For many of us with younger children, we spend 5 mornings a week for 36 weeks out of the year going through the same routine. Get ‘em up, get ‘em dressed and fed, make ‘em lunch and get ‘em out the door; it can become almost robotic. Sometimes we don’t have time to think- we just do.
For example, have you ever stopped to think about how many sandwich bags you use? Chances are you use a whole heck of a lot. The average mom probably goes through at least 2 a day per child. For a mom with 3 kids, that’s about 30 per week. So during the school year alone, that adds up to 1,080 baggies that will probably wind up in the trash despite your efforts to re-use. We know you mean well, but sometimes there’s just no preventing them from getting into our landfills and oceans by the thousands.
Pouch Pals is a company that was created by “Mom-Entrapeneur”, Allison Cohen, who decided a few years back that something had to be done about the sandwich baggie epidemic. The idea is brilliant- durable baggies made of 100% cotton fabric exterior, lined with a water-resistant nylon interior that are completely safe and re-usable. And the best part is, after lunch, your kids won’t want to throw them out because Pouch Pals are just as cute and fashionable as their lunch boxes! When purchasing from the online store, you have your choice of 15 different designs for your eco-friendly sandwich or snack-sized baggies.
Not only are Pouch Pals a great alternative to disposables, they will help save you money and time in the grocery store. And, of course, it’s a fun and smart way to help you busy moms go Green!

As some of you may know I recently sealed the carpets at my son’s school so that we could avoid the emissions of VOCs all year long. The school was nice enough to call me when they installed the carpet so that I could have this process completed. Schools are on tighter budgets these days and 100% wool carpet was definitely out of reach. We have a wonderful school and they are making efforts to “be green”. We have a master organic gardener on staff, the children bring in compost materials, and they teach about and practice recycling. This year the school has even asked parents to purchase reusables for their children’s lunches to include snack bags, stainless water bottles, and cloth napkins. They are doing away with plastic bags and bottles!
Imagine my surprise when I showed up today (the week before school starts) to drop off supplies and smelled heavy fumes. They were painting the classrooms and front office with paint that was clearly not “no VOC” paint. The staff was working in this environment with closed doors and windows because it was so hot outside. It was surprising to me that they were unphased by the fumes because I had a head rush right away. I was perplexed by the whole thing because we just discussed the VOCs in the carpet weeks ago. Needless to say, this upset me very much. I am still waiting for the director to call me with the information on which paint was used in the class. I know they see me coming from a mile away. Am I the only one that speaks up about these things at school? I would have gladly paid the difference in the cost between the two paints(it is not much).
I called my fabulous friend Julie on the way home and she shared this with me, “Nickie, you have to understand that this is crystal clear for you. It is not clear to everyone. One day they will get it.” As the day went on I realized that we all still have a lot of work to do. We must continue to spread the knowledge that we have in a loving way to protect our health and our planet. It is not that people don’t care, it is that they just don’t get it!
Please advocate for and speak up about these things at your school, church, and office so that we are all surrounded by a healthy environment. Do not be afraid to ask what they are spraying in your child’s classroom or painting on the walls. This should concern all of us and the more we speak up the more change will come.
no VOCs in paints and carpet
no chemical cleaners
minimal plastics and styrofoam use
recycling
Thanks for reading Hip Moms Go Green and supporting these values!
Isn’t it great when you can take care of two problems with only step? Fortunately, here is an easy way to give you those feelings of satisfaction and make you feel like a model of efficiency: getting rid of junk mail.
You may not be surprised to learn that junk mail is no one’s friend. Not only does it clutter your life and mailbox with unnecessary and often annoying advertisements, but (even more insidious than spam) it takes a lot of trees to send out those mailers by the millions. In addition to the paper used in mailers, chemically toxic inks and resins are often used for more elaborate advertisements and fake brochures. The companies who send junk mail tend not to care that they are wasting valuable resources that will almost always be immediately transferred to the trash can, so it is up to us to do something about it.
Stopping junk mail is a lot like stopping those annoying telemarketing calls: you simple have to put yourself on a list letting companies know to NOT send you mailers. There are several list options based on what type of mailers you tend to receive a lot of. For instance, if you receive a lot of credit and credit card junk mail, you should consider for signing up for the Opt Out service provided at https://www.optoutprescreen.com/?rf=t, http://www.41pounds.org/. This service essentially tells the major credit report companies to stop sending your information to other companies. If these companies don’t know what your credit is like, they will not bother sending you credit information. You can choose to Opt Out for five years electronically, or you can sign up for a permanent Opt Out from all credit offers.
If you can spare one dollar, fill out the form at https://www.dmachoice.org/dma/member/regist.action, which lets 3600 different organizations know you do not want their junk mail. Don’t forget about catalogs! Even more paper and toxic chemicals are wasted on catalogs and magazines you never read and may not want in the first place. Use catalogchoice.org to stop receiving catalogs and choose better, electronic options instead.
With the right applications and a little bit of time, you can unclutter your life and help promote eco-friendly business practices at the same time. Deals don’t get any better than that!
Naturally, we all want nothing but the best for our children. Thankfully, Mother Nature has given us more than enough resources to naturally do so.
Heather Hamilton, creator of Zoe Organics, is one mother who’s got the right idea and has taken full advantage of these resources. Now, she’s sharing what she has with us! Named after her niece, Zoe Anne (who’s mother, Suzanne sadly passed when she was only 3-months old), Heather has put together a line of affordable, purely organic baby-care products to protect and promote the health of our children, as well as the preservation of our beautiful Earth.
Using only the most gentle, soothing and essential ingredients, Zoe Organics carries five must-have, all-natural products for the new Mommy: Diaper Balm, Baby Bath Tea, Baby Massage Oil, Baby Balm and Gentle Hair & Body Wash. Each is totally free of harsh chemical by-products, yet still maintains the quality and luxury your baby deserves; and all are created for long-lasting, maximum use. These “babies” are tried-and-true by real, satisfied moms (read their testimonials here). Also, be sure to check out the blog on the Zoe Organics website for updates on the collection and the latest in organic baby-care.
We are proud to announce that Zoe Organics are this week’s Green Giveaway! We hope you enjoy these products as much as we do. It’s such a wonderful feeling to be able to pamper your baby the way it was meant to be- with only the purest ingredients of nature.
Continuing our mission to integrate environmentally-sustainable practices and healthy lifestyles into the American ethos, Hip Moms Go Green has launched The Go Green Pages. A national online directory of verifiably green businesses, products and services, thegogreenpages.com will help consumers make informed decisions on which businesses to patronize and guide them in achieving a sustainable, yet comfortable, lifestyle.
The Go Green Pages gives environmentally-conscious entrepreneurs the unique opportunity to list their products and services with minimal editorial regulation. With the freedom to post videos, links, photos, articles, and reviews, green businesses have the unfettered ability to promote a green lifestyle, educate consumers on saving money through sustainability, and ultimately boost sales. Drawing on the experience and trust we have built educating thousands of mothers on green living, the editorial team at Hip Moms Go Green investigates and verifies a business’s green credentials before approval to the directory. Listed businesses benefit from Hip Moms Go Green’s established following and Hip Moms Go Green’s readers finally have the directory that they have been asking for.
Designed for the general consumer population, The Go Green Pages already features nearly 900 businesses nationwide, including organic boutiques and restaurants, which offer products and services ranging from art supplies to fashion accessories and eco-travel to air purification.
Thegogreenpages.com will prove we no longer have to sacrifice style and substance to go green. Hip Moms Go Green is convinced that protecting the environment and children are synonymous. By offering consumers an array of practical sustainable products and services, thegogreenpages.com will enable Americans to effortlessly and affordably integrate sustainability into every aspect of their daily lives.
