Hip Moms Go Green

Back to School Lunch Picks

builtlunchbag

Summer is over and its that time of year to go school shopping. Try to reuse items from last year to stay green and recycle the ones that are trashed. You can make back to school shopping fun, eco, and safe this year with HipMomsGoGreen picks. I have personally bought all of the items on the list. All of the products are on a second year of use so they really last!

The Spicy Relish Lunch Tote by Built is the best lunch box. My youngest son used a built lunch box last year and it is still in perfect condition this year. My other sons had different brands that will remain nameless. These were trashed and looked like I ran over them with my car. The built bag has a TON of space for everything including a full size water bottle, bowls, sacks, napkin and more. It folds flat when empty and is fairly compact. The neoprene stretches to accommodate all your lunch essentials and stands up solid. Its easy to carry with soft-grip handles or with removable shoulder strap. It comes with an inside pocket and has a zip closure. The bag was tested for lead safety, has no vinyl or PVC. The best part is that you can wash it and it is like NEW! Enjoy.

The Klean Kanteen 18 oz colorful bottle with sports cap is a reusable, stainless steel bottle that is lab tested to be 100% free of heavy metal, toxins, and BPA. This is the perfect size because you can also fit it in the lunch tote. The wide-mouth accommodates ice cubes (big issue for others) and makes cleaning easy. The sports cap is wonderful but if you have a toddler I have mentioned before the sippy cup lid is the best from this company.

I love LunchSkins Reusable Sandwich Bags mainly because they work very well. These bags have a seal that is strong and the food stays fresh. I am on my second year with these bags so they really hold up well are worth the price.  They are a colorful, high-quality alternative to plastic baggies. Made from the same food-safe materials used in high-end bakeries and patisseries, not only will they store your food. They are quick drying, greaseproof, and dishwasher safe. They are high-quality cotton with food-safe coating, and are BPA-free, lead-free and phthalate-free. They also have a nice big space to write your child’s name.

Kids Konserve stainless steel containers are perfect for packing your lunches. They last forever and are made with an amazing seal when you place the top on. The tiered sizes hold snacks, sides and main courses and they nest inside each other when you’re done, taking up minimal storage space. Unlike many other containers, they don’t leak, so you can pack your favorite foods and toss them in your bags without worry.

The Problem With Fast Food Additives

nofastfood

Do you know the difference between processed foods and whole foods? Most people just pass it off with a casual, “Well, process foods are worse for me and my kids…” This is true, but also an understatement. How they are worse, and how many foods are worse is a more frightening subject. Basically, processed foods have chemicals put in them. All sorts of different chemicals are used for all kinds of reasons (preservatives, flavor enhancers, food coloring) and most are bad news. Manufacturers are more interested in making the food transportable and noticeable than making it healthy.

Fast foods are often the worst of the worst. Since fast foods have to be shipped and prepared very quickly, they tend to always be processed. Fast food companies usually have a tug-of-war with the FDA. A food additive will be approved, then retested for years before being pulled again, then replaced by another questionable additive that has been blocked for years. This give and take creates an environment of constant change in processed foods, and not always for the good.

Currently, major culprit-chemicals of fast food fouls abound. One of the most infamous is MSG. This flavor enhancer is used because it’s cheap, and is found in all kinds of fast food, where it causes headaches, nausea, breathing difficulties, and other problems in a select number of people. Sodium benzoate is another offender: a common preservative, it and food coloring additives like it have been linked to child hyperactivity development. Aspartame is only one of the sugar substitutes used in processed foods that has been found to increase susceptibility to cancers. Sodium nitrites, the colorings that keep meats looking healthy and clean (even when they sometimes aren’t) are also suspected of being carcinogenic, as are BHA (Butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (Butylated hydrozyttoluene).

As parents, you should watch out especially for fruit juices marketed to kids. These juices are processed with additives, food colorings, synthetic sugars, and preservatives, making them multiple threats in one. If you are shopping at the grocery store, be careful of the easy fast food meals that are just heat and serve. These typically contain the most preservatives. Also keep an eye on the ingredients of packaged meats. These meats are injected with chemicals to fight off bacteria but can also develop carcinogenic qualities when introduced into the human body. Some meat is irradiated, may produce a number of dubious and as-yet-untested side effects.

When you can, just look for local produce. Since it comes from nearby farms, no preservatives are needed to keep it fresh. Since it has passed through fewer hands, it is much more likely to have fewer chemicals injected for the sake of appearance or taste. Plus, you’ll be supporting your local economy and small time, hard working farmers! For more information on additives used in fast food, visit: http://www.fda.gov/Food/FoodIngredientsPackaging/ucm115333.htm. This website leads to a comprehensive list on the subject.

Childhood Asthma: Surprising Environmental Causes & Prevention

ChildWithAsthma

Childhood asthma is a debilitating disease that affects the lungs of young children and can last throughout adulthood. This condition can cause a lot of pain and fear in young children, and can be heavy on their parents’ minds and pocketbooks. Not only is childhood asthma a terrifying experience, it is also on the rise. Several government studies have shown that childhood asthma conditions have increased by as much as 60 to 70 percent! Of course, some is these are probably doctors becoming better at diagnosing asthma conditions, but the rise is still astonishing. Childhood asthma is now the most common condition in the developed world, and things aren’t going to get better.

The problem is that the lungs are very sensitive organs that eagerly absorb inhaled air to pick up all the oxygen that they can. In the process, lungs also absorb any particles in the air straight into their tissues. You may not be surprised to learn that the air indoors is filled with all kinds of particles that can cause damage to the lung tissue. High on the list are particles produced from paint and outgassing. VOCs and other fume particles from paint are clearly bad news, causing a variety of illnesses throughout the body, but when a baby is raised in a home where there’s a lot of VOCs, its lungs can become permanently weakened.

You may have never heard of outgassing, but it happens when particle board used to build houses starts to “exhale” or release particles from inside its fibers into the air. Unfortunately, particle board is put together with truly nasty chemicals like formaldehyde, which have been proven to cause lung damage when they are breathed in. And before you start blaming these construction chemicals for all the asthma in the world, take a look at the studies done in Australia and Europe that link childhood asthma to common household cleaners, especially bleach. Window cleaners, air fresheners, and disinfectants were also pinpointed.

If you are worried about your child developing an asthma condition, you may be panicking–understandably–but fortunately there are things you can do to make your home safer and hopefully asthma-free. First, use green construction materials wherever possible. VOC-free paints and varnishes are a must. To get rid of the outgassing effect, try using green particle board instead. This board uses recycled lumber materials and natural resins instead of formaldehyde and other nasty chemicals. Finally, be extra careful of what chemical cleaners and cosmetics you use. When in doubt, always look at the labels. If there’s a warning sign, it’s there for a reason. Stay away from bleach and try using eco-friendly products, stain-fighting enzymes, and ionized water when possible.

Furry Vengeance

Furry-Vengeance_poster-535x792

A comedy romp that feels a little like “Dr. Doolittle” meets “The Great Outdoors,” Furry Vengeance stars an assortment of animatronics forest creatures along with humans, Brendan Fraser and Brooke Shields. This fun family film sends a message about saving the environment with a campy comedy spirit.

In the movie, a young real estate developer, Dan Sanders faces the retaliation of a gang of furry and winged animals determined to thwart his attempts to create a new housing subdivision. The gang’s leader, a super-savvy and determined raccoon, leads his animal tribe to fight Sanders and eventually teach him the consequences of destroying a part of the fragile ecosystem.

In connection with the film, there’s a social campaign afoot called ‘Take Part,’ which focuses on the importance of endangered species and habitat preservation. An online guide accompanying the movie offers ways to get involved with ‘Take Part’ as well as volunteer information and an activity guide. A customized package of activities and materials will be delivered to elementary students nationwide to get them involved and inspired to protect animals and their home habitats. The film teaches kids the ramifications of hurting the environment and how to be green, not mean.

The Magic School Bus and the Climate Challenge

MSBclimateJKT

Earth Day Series Post #5

In honor of Earth Day we have created a series dedicated to inspire environmental awareness and conversation between you and your kiddos. This book will surely do the trick!  I received a copy of The Magic School Bus and the Climate Challenge by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen to review and loved it.  This book is filled with easy to learn facts about climate change.  Be sure to check out our Green Giveaways to enter a chance to win this delightful book and an Organic “Go Green” Scholastic t-shirt.

The book starts out when Ms. Frizzle brings an old book of the world to class that she had when she was a little girl. Then she whisks the children off in the flying Magic School Bus to tour the world. The children are amazed at the differences in what they see happening on the earth today and what was in the book years ago when “The Friz” was only nine years old.

The difficult subject matter is presented in a way that my four and seven year old boys found highly entertaining. As always The Magic School Bus is fun and beautifully illustrated. Your children will come away from this book educated and inspired in the different ways they can make a difference in the greenhouse effect. My boys got out coloring materials and started drawing up plans on how they can help teach other kids to use less energy. I am overjoyed!

Be sure to sign up for this fun webcast with “The Fizz”!

Earth Day Craft Project~for Kids

litterbug_small

In honor of Earth Day I will post several projects, book recommendations, and things to do with your children until April 22, 2010.  This is intended to be a fun and inspiring series so that you can share with them the importance of environmental responsibility in a way that promotes conversation. Remember, you can share these ideas and books at your children’s school as well.  Here is the first project!

How to Make a Litter Bug

What better way to save the Earth than teach future generations how to help? This is a wonderful project to do with your children that will allow for environmental conversation and teaching. This is also a great opportunity for class moms to promote environmental awareness by teaching a group of children how to make a litter bug. This project promotes green living, teaches children about the risks of littering, reinforces the importance of recycling, and provides a fun piece of art to take home to Mom and Dad.

The only things necessary for making a litter bug is a segment of an egg carton and glue. All of the other items are completely up to you, but should be recycled – caps, plastic lids, lolli pop sticks, old buttons, packing popcorn, etc. Just check your recycle bin and save a few things.

You can start by teaching the group about the affects of littering. Next, talk about how long some of the items they are using to create their litter bugs would sit on the earth in a landfill. For example, you might want to share with the children that it takes about 500 years for some plastics to biodegrade. You can easily add little facts like this while teaching how to complete the litter bug, making this a fun and educational project.

Give each student a single segment of the egg carton. This will be the litter bug’s body. After that, the students should be able to dig through the recycled materials for objects that can be used for body parts. Straws make great legs, and water bottle lids look fantastic as eyes.

The more interesting things to be used for body parts the better. Try to bring in things like bottle caps, magazine cut-outs, Christmas ribbons, and old buttons or beads. If you can glue it onto the egg carton, then go for it! Keep plenty of glue around for this project that is sure to teach and entertain.

Materials needed:

Egg carton
Recyclables~caps, packing material, magazine cut-outs or whatever small thing you can find.
Reuseables~buttons, ribbon, beads ect..
Glue
